Wisconsin Native Awarded Fellowship to Explore Ministry

St. Paul, Minn. - Tricia B. Gonwa, a Wisconsin native and junior at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., majoring in international studies, has been awarded a Fund for Theological Education Fellowship for the consideration of ministry as a career. Gonwa is the daughter of Dr. William and Elizabeth Gonwa of Wauwatosa, Wis.

In 2003, the Fund for Theological Education (FTE) named 70 Undergraduate Fellows. Each holds a 3.0 cumulative GPA, demonstrates a gift for leadership and has a strong Christian faith. This group of 30 men and 40 women represent 21 denominations and 57 undergraduate institutions.

Each Undergraduate Fellow will receive a $1,500 award to be used for educational expenses or for a special project to explore ministry. Those Undergraduate Fellows who apply will also receive a $500 stipend for a mentoring project to further investigate ministry in partnership with a professor, pastor or other guiding adult.

All 2003 Undergraduate Fellows attended the 2003 Summer Conference on Excellence in Ministry, "The Art of Ministry," held June 19-22, 2003, at Emory University's Candler School of Theology in Atlanta, Ga. Fellows explored issues of vocation, theology, and ministry with practicing clergy and theological educators.

Established in 1954, the Fund for Theological Education has grown in both scope and commitment as one of the leading voices in theological education. The Fund has awarded some 5,000 fellowships and counts among its alumni many of the most prominent theological educators and church leaders in North America. Today FTE continues its efforts to attract the best and brightest students to the practices of ministry and theological teaching and scholarship.

Macalester is a private liberal arts college with a full-time enrollment of 1,851 students. Macalester is nationally recognized for its commitment to academic excellence, internationalism, diversity and service to society.
