Senior Executive at UnitedHealth Group Named to Macalester's Board

St. Paul, Minn. - Lois E. Quam, a senior executive at UnitedHealth Group, has been named to the Board of Trustees at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn. UnitedHealth Group is a diversified health and well-being company with over $25 billion in annual revenue.

An executive with UnitedHealth Group since 1989, Quam is the Chief Executive Officer of Ovations, one of the company's six operating businesses. With annual revenues of $6.2 billion, Ovations is the largest business in the United States dedicated to serving the health and well-being needs of people age 50 and older. This singular focus uniquely positions Ovations to serve older Americans with access to care services, preventive and acute health care services, and services to address chronic conditions.

Quam is responsible for managing UnitedHealth Group's contract with AARP, America's largest non-profit organization. As the senior leader responsible for the UnitedHealth Group proposal to AARP in 1996, Quam was instrumental in guiding the AARP insurance contract transfer, one of the largest business transitions in the history of the U.S. insurance industry. Ovations also provides the nation's largest prescription savings program, which includes access to a retail pharmacy network and pharmacy mail order service.

As part of Ovations, Quam oversees Evercare, one of the nation's largest healthcare companies serving aging, vulnerable and chronically ill individuals. Through Evercare, UnitedHealth Group is the first U.S. company to provide care services in the United Kingdom, working with the British National Health Service to develop 10 pilot projects. Ovations also works in partnership with the federal government to provide access to a broad array of health care coverage options for elderly and disabled individuals who quality for Medicare.

A Rhodes Scholar, Quam received a Master's Degree in philosophy, politics and economics from Oxford University and graduated magna cum laude from Macalester in 1983. She received a wide range of academic and leadership awards including Phi Beta Kappa, the Humphrey-Mondale Leadership Award, and the Katherine Hauser Award for Scholarship on Women's History.

Quam is married to Rep. Matt Entenza, a Macalester alumni who serves as DFL Leader in the Minnesota House of Representatives. She resides in St. Paul with her husband and three sons.

Quam said that she welcomes the opportunity to return to Macalester. "Macalester College is a very important part of our community and city," she said. "I look forward to serving on the Board of Trustees of a school that was so instrumental in my life."

UnitedHealth Group (www.unitedhealthgroup.com) is a diversified health and well-being enterprise that provides a full spectrum of resources and services to help people achieve improved health and well-being through all stages of life.

Macalester College is a private liberal arts college with a full-time enrollment of 1,851 students. Macalester is nationally recognized for its commitment to academic excellence, internationalism, diversity and service to society.
