Theater and Dance Department Professor Sears A. Eldredge directs. One of
Molière's best-loved comedies, "The School for Wives" first production
in 1662 starred the playwright himself in the role of Arnolphe. Arnolphe has schemed
to marry his young ward Agnes whom he has kept in a convent since the age of five
in the hopes that she will remain devoted, ignorant and chaste - in other words,
the "perfect" wife. But he doesn't count on Agnes meeting Horace and
falling madly in love. Then the competition - and the fun - really begin. Sears
A. Eldredge has directed numerous productions of classic and contemporary plays
at Macalester. He has also directed shows at The Drama Studio, London, and Berkeley,
California, and at Theatre in the Round in Minneapolis. An article about his intercultural
noh play, "Return to Kanburi," appeared in the spring 2004 issue of
the international magazine Kyoto Journal (#56). Macalester is a private,
national liberal arts college with a full-time enrollment of 1,845 students. Macalester
is nationally recognized for its long-standing commitment to academic excellence,
internationalism, diversity and civic engagement. ###
