Champlin, Minn., Native Awarded Fulbright Teaching Assistantship to Germany;
Honors Graduate from Macalester College

St. Paul, Minn. - Breanne L. Goodell, of Champlin, Minn., and a 2005 Macalester College graduate, has been awarded a Fulbright Teaching Assistantship to Germany. Goodell graduated magna cum laude at Macalester's 116th Commencement on campus May 14, 2005. She is the daughter of Ann Lowry of Minneapolis, Minn., and Bradley Goodell of Champlin, Minn., and graduated from Champlin Park High School.

Fulbright grants are made to U.S. citizens and nationals of other countries for a variety of educational activities, primarily university lecturing, advanced research, graduate study and teaching in elementary and secondary schools. Since the program's inception, more than 250,000 participants --chosen for their leadership potential-- have had the opportunity to observe each other's political, economic and cultural institutions.

Goodell, a German Studies and International Studies double major, will be teaching English as a foreign language. She hopes her stay in Germany will contribute to her preparation for global citizenship, help her gain insight into youth experience, engagement and activism in global movements and better understand international issues in Germany.

Goodell was also honored at the annual Honors Convocation which recognizes select students for outstanding academic achievement, leadership and community service. She received the following honors/awards:

Virginia McKnight Binger Prize (in German Studies and Russian) - Awards students who show exceptional proficiency in modern languages and literature.

Delta Phi Alpha - The National German Honor Society seeks to recognize excellence in the study of German and to provide an incentive for higher scholarship. Student members are chosen from senior German majors and cores who attain at least a 3.5 grade point average in Macalester German courses and have an overall grade point average of 3.0 or greater.

During the Commencement ceremony, Macalester College President Brian Rosenberg presented diplomas to 460 graduating seniors. Edward Hirsch, prize-winning poet, scholar, teacher and foundation president, gave the keynote address.

Macalester is a private or national liberal arts college with a full-time enrollment of 1,845 students. Macalester is nationally recognized for its long-standing commitment to academic excellence, internationalism, diversity and civic engagement.
