HOURCAR Celebrates New Hub at Macalester
with Dedication on April 27, 2006

St. Paul, Minn. – HOURCAR, a national car-sharing program, is announcing a new partnership with Macalester College to provide car-sharing to students, faculty and people living or working near the college.

?HOURCAR will be celebrating the dedication of the Macalester hub

HOURCAR, the Twin Cities’ fast-growing car-sharing program, serves the Twin Cities with gas-electric hybrids, which regularly garner over 47 miles to the gallon and produce few emissions.  Macalester sees HOURCAR as a good fit for the campus community where the car could be used by qualifying students, faculty, and staff who don’t arrive on campus with a car.

“Many of our students chose not to own cars, and many Macalester employees arrive by bus each day,” said Tom Welna, director of the Macalester College High Winds Fund.    “With HOURCAR, people can reserve the car for as long as they need, use it, park it and walk away. It makes good sense – for the neighborhood and the campus.”

HOURCAR members make reservations online or over the phone, pick up an HOURCAR at a nearby hub, return the car to the reserved parking space, lock it up and walk away.  Cars have on-board computers to record trip information and members are billed monthly.  The costs for gas, insurance and parking are all included.

HOURCAR members choose from a variety of rate plans to meet their needs.  One plan costs just $5 per month, $6.95 per hour, and $.45 mile.  Another plan includes 5 hours of driving and 75 miles for just $38 per month.  There is no annual fee.

The Macalester “hub” will be the most recent addition to HOURCAR’s growing service territory.  Patagonia, a Grand Avenue retailer, is providing the Macalester parking spot and is also a partner in this new venture.  HOURCAR has twelve other locations, serving Downtown Minneapolis, Uptown Minneapolis, Loring Park, the Wedge neighborhood, the 46th Street Light Rail Station, Northeast Minneapolis, Downtown Saint Paul and the Saint Anthony Park neighborhood.

HOURCAR members must meet basic requirements, including holding a valid driver’s license for five years.  Individual, household, and business memberships are available.  For information on hub locations, rates, or to join online, please visit www.HOURCAR.org.

HOURCAR is a program of the nonprofit Neighborhood Energy Connection, whose mission is to reduce pollution, conserve resources, and improve quality of life by offering tools for energy-efficient living.

Macalester College, founded in 1874, is a national liberal arts college with a full-time enrollment of 1,841 students. Macalester is nationally recognized for its long-standing commitment to academic excellence, internationalism, multiculturalism and civic engagement.
