St. Paul, Minn. – Matthew W. Rosenbaum of Richmond, Calif., has been awarded a Fulbright scholarship to Japan. Rosenbaum, who majored in Biology and Japanese, graduated at Macalester College’s 118th Commencement on May 12, 2007. He is the son of John Rosenbaum of Richmond, Calif., and Louise Rosenbaum of Albany, Calif. He graduated high school from Athenian School in Danville, Calif.
Fulbright Grants and other grants for graduate study abroad are administered by the Institute of International Education. This group of scholarships is awarded with the cooperation of the Department of State, foreign governments and private donors for study in some 150 countries of the world. Approximately 1200 grants will be given this year to candidates who hold at least the B.A. degree and who may not yet have received the Ph.D. Proficiency in the language of the host country is usually required.
“I propose a study of Okinawan culture and lifestyle with particular focus on diet and nutrition in order to elucidate a link to the region’s high concentration of centenarians,” said Rosenbaum. “In addition, I will continue my education in Japanese as well as endeavor to perform biological research related to health and longevity.”
During the Commencement ceremony, Macalester College President Brian Rosenberg presented diplomas to 462 graduating seniors. Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children's Defense Fund (CDF), gave the keynote address.
Macalester College, founded in 1874, is a national liberal arts college with a full-time enrollment of 1,884 students. Macalester is nationally recognized for its long-standing commitment to academic excellence, internationalism, multiculturalism and civic engagement.
