Hopkins, Minn., Native Awarded Fulbright Scholarship to Senegal
St. Paul, Minn. – Emily C. Hedin of Hopkins, Minn., has been awarded a Fulbright scholarship to Senegal. Hedin, who majored in Political Science and International Studies and minored in French, graduated at Macalester College’s 118th Commencement on May 12, 2007. She is the daughter of Bruce Quady and Katherine Hedin of Hopkins, Minn. She graduated from Hopkins High School in Minnetonka, Minn.
Fulbright Grants and other grants for graduate study abroad are administered by the Institute of International Education. This group of scholarships is awarded with the cooperation of the Department of State, foreign governments and private donors for study in some 150 countries of the world. Approximately 1200 grants will be given this year to candidates who hold at least the B.A. degree and who may not yet have received the Ph.D. Proficiency in the language of the host country is usually required.
“This study will examine how microfinance negatively or positively impacts the growth of democratic efficacy and gender equality in Senegal,” said Hedin. “I have selected four microfinance institutions in contrasting communities as case studies. I will examine how each institution addresses democracy and gender rights and whether or not the institution is able to effectively pursue both goals simultaneously.”
During the Commencement ceremony, Macalester College President Brian Rosenberg presented diplomas to 462 graduating seniors. Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children's Defense Fund (CDF), gave the keynote address.
Macalester College, founded in 1874, is a national liberal arts college with a full-time enrollment of 1,884 students. Macalester is nationally recognized for its long-standing commitment to academic excellence, internationalism, multiculturalism and civic engagement.
