Cedarburg, Wis., Native Awarded Fulbright Scholarship to Morocco
St. Paul, Minn. – Megan R. Mulcahy of Cedarburg, Wis., has been awarded a Fulbright scholarship to Morocco. Mulcahy, who majored in International Studies, graduated at Macalester College’s 118th Commencement on May 12, 2007. She is the daughter of Patrick and Lisa Mulcahy of Cedarburg, Wis. She graduated from Grafton Senior High School in Grafton, Wis.
Fulbright Grants and other grants for graduate study abroad are administered by the Institute of International Education. This group of scholarships is awarded with the cooperation of the Department of State, foreign governments and private donors for study in some 150 countries of the world. Approximately 1200 grants will be given this year to candidates who hold at least the B.A. degree and who may not yet have received the Ph.D. Proficiency in the language of the host country is usually required.
“I will observe the work of government-sponsored female Islamic guides in impoverished communities vulnerable to extremism, and evaluate the program’s influence and effectiveness in promoting moderate Islam,” said Mulcahy.
During the Commencement ceremony, Macalester College President Brian Rosenberg presented diplomas to 462 graduating seniors. Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children's Defense Fund (CDF), gave the keynote address.
Macalester College, founded in 1874, is a national liberal arts college with a full-time enrollment of 1,884 students. Macalester is nationally recognized for its long-standing commitment to academic excellence, internationalism, multiculturalism and civic engagement.
