St. Paul, Minn. - “Gods and Monsters,” the 2007-08 theme for Macalester College’s Theater and Dance Department, provides the creative impulse for the Fall Dance Concert. The concert, at 7:30 p.m., Fri. and Sat., Dec. 7 & 8, and 2 p.m., Sun., Dec. 9, is in the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center Main Stage Theater, 1600 Grand Avenue, St. Paul, Minn. Choreography in the realms of jazz, rhythmic percussion and modern with a hint of classical Indian dance intertwines with appearances from monsters, both real and imagined.
Macalester faculty members Becky Heist and Sharon Varosh probe into the experience of immigration and refugee status. While sharing in portions of the research for these pieces the resulting dances are distinct, identifying the unique choreographic visions of Heist and Varosh.
Macalester student Safiya Carter-Thompson, inspired by contemporary dance legend Merce Cunningham, enters the world of chance choreography. Papers holding the names of dance phrases are plucked from a hat, therefore randomly organizing the movement material. A musical composition will be drawn from a pool of CDs shortly before each event, resulting in a spontaneous performance for dancers and audience alike.
Macalester dance minor Emily Gastineau explores text and movement based upon her summer research grant on “embodied activism and social transformation.”
The performance wraps up with guest artist Joe Chvala’s The Well of Urd, created in collaboration with singer Ruth MacKenzie. Chvala’s choreography vibrates with fast paced rhythms, percussive bodily motions and high energy.
Macalester College, founded in 1874, is a national liberal arts college with a full-time enrollment of 1,873 students. Macalester is nationally recognized for its long-standing commitment to academic excellence, internationalism, multiculturalism and civic engagement.
