Kids Judge! at Macalester Neuroscience Fair Sat., Dec. 1
St. Paul, Minn. - Elementary school children from the Twin Cities will judge Macalester College students’ exhibits and presentations during the sixth annual Kids Judge! Neuroscience Fair beginning at 9 a.m., Sat., Dec. 1, in the Olin-Rice Science Center, 1600 Grand Ave., St. Paul, Minn.
About 150 fourth, fifth and sixth graders from ACES (Athletes Committed to Educating Students after school program the Twin Cities), the American Indian Magnet Elementary School in St. Paul, Farnsworth Aerospace Magnet School in St. Paul, Get Ready! (an after school college access program in the Twin Cities), Jackson Street Village housing in St. Paul and the Sabathani Community Center in Minneapolis will judge 40 Macalester students’ exhibits and presentations. Another 20 Macalester students will be guides and event volunteers.
The children are "launched" into their groups (rockets, comets, space ships) with a Macalester volunteer student leader and will learn how the brain processes information such as language, pain sensitivity and visual perception. Each group of four to eight children will visit six different Macalester student demonstrations. The Macalester students are from Psychology Department Professor Eric Wiertelak's “Brain, Mind and Behavior” class.
The younger students will evaluate each exhibit and vote on the best presentation at the end of the fair.
Kids Judge! Neuroscience Fair is a nationwide program, and Macalester is the only college in the upper Midwest with a Kids Judge event. The National Institute on Drug Abuse, a division of the National Institutes of Health, provided the original funding for the program. Sponsors include the Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience, Brain Awareness Week Partners in Education and the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives.
Macalester College, founded in 1874, is a national liberal arts college with a full-time enrollment of 1,873 students. Macalester is nationally recognized for its long-standing commitment to academic excellence, internationalism, multiculturalism and civic engagement.
