Two Sociology Graduates Win Awards from the Law and Society Association
St. Paul, Minn - June 10, 2008 - The Law and Society Association have recognized Patricia Bass and Claire Posner, both 2008 Macalester graduates, for papers they wrote.
Bass won the 2008 Undergraduate Paper Award from the Law and Society Association for her paper “Regulating the ‘Social Mix:’ How and Why do France and the U.S. Desegregate Housing,” comparing how national political cultures shape policies of housing desegregation in France and the United States.
Posner received Honorable Mention from the Law and Society Association for her paper “Choosing Truth: The Influence of Function, Institutions, and Global Culture on the Establishment of Truth and Reconciliation Commissions,” comparing 20 post-conflict countries to determine what influences the decision to establish a truth-and-reconciliation commission (TRC). She also received honorable mention for the Undergraduate Paper Award from the Sociology of Law Section of the American Sociological Association for the same paper.
This is the second consecutive year that a student from Macalester has won the association’s undergraduate prize. Macalester joins Amherst College and Princeton University as the only schools which have had multiple undergraduate prize winners.
The Law and Society Association, founded in 1964, is a group of scholars from many fields and countries, interested in the place of law in social, political, economic and cultural life. The Association’s annual meeting was in June in Montreal.
Macalester College, founded in 1874, is a national liberal arts college with a full-time enrollment of 1,889 students. Macalester is nationally recognized for its long-standing commitment to academic excellence, internationalism, diversity and civic engagement.
