Macalester students Arielle Miwa Oseki Robbins ‘12, Dominika Seblova ‘11 and Elizabeth Foster ’12 were honored at the Staples Ashoka Youth Social Entrepreneur Competition last week for their work organizing and running the 2009 Minnesota Campus Energy Challenge (MCEC).
The Staples Ashoka competition asks Youth Venture teams, which are made up of students between the ages of 12-24, to explain what course of action they have taken to address a social issue affecting their community.
The four achievement award winning countires, recognized for their outstanding impact, innovation and potential, went to the United States/Minnesota Campus Energy Challenge (MCEC) represented by the three Macalester students, Brazil, Germany and India. The Excellence Award Winner was Mexico.
The Minnesota Campus Energy Challenge, first held under a different name in the 2005-2006 academic year, is a month-long competition designed to engage college campuses in energy reduction. The competition helps individuals and institutions to examine and creatively reduce their impact in context of the global overconsumption and unequal distribution of energy draw.
