Louisa Chapman Receives Macalester Alumni Service Award
June 9, 2009 - Louisa Chapman of Atlanta, Ga., has received Macalester College’s 2009 Alumni Service Award. Chapman graduated from Macalester in 1975.
The Alumni Service Award is presented to an alumnus or alumna of Macalester whose significant service and consistent loyalty to the college has set an outstanding example of volunteerism. Nominations for this award are made by Macalester staff.
Dr. Chapman is a medical epidemiologist with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta and a commissioned member of the United States Public Health Service. As part of various teams, Chapman has addressed nearly every public health challenge of the last 20 years, including a deadly hantavirus, smallpox, anthrax, terrorism, the West Nile virus, and the health of Hurricane Katrina victims. Most recently, she collaborated with colleagues around the world to develop science and policy around xenotransplantation, the use of non-human tissue in human beings, treatment that holds great promise, but runs the risk of introducing new infections to the human recipients.
Yet Chapman is well known for her myriad efforts to keep alumni connected to Macalester and each other through opera outings and potlucks in Atlanta, her six years of service on the Alumni Board, and her extensive commitment to making this year’s Reunion the best ever.
She is also generous in advising students considering careers in medicine and public health. She credits her service to Macalester to a longtime family commitment to education, and to her delight in meeting alumni who have chosen many different career paths.
“I have met alumni who have achieved remarkable things, people I would otherwise rarely encounter—kindergarten teachers, political scientists and others who engage the world and energetically pursue their interests,” said Chapman.
The Alumni Relations staff unanimously nominated her with these words: “Her loyalty, commitment and passion for our school and our community are exemplary and truly deserving of the 2009 Alumni Service Award.”
Macalester College, founded in 1874, is a national liberal arts college with a full-time enrollment of 1,858 students. Macalester is nationally recognized for its long-standing commitment to academic excellence, internationalism, multiculturalism and civic engagement.
