November 18, 2009 - St. Paul, Minn. - Macalester College has announced that it has received a gift to support a $400,000 scholarship endowment for students from Grand Marais or Cook County, Minn., who attend the college.

The children of Grand Marais residents Donald and Shirley Hewitt generously provided the funding for the scholarship fund which bears their name. The Donald and Shirley Hewitt scholarship fund was created in 2008 to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary. Additional funds were added this year to commemorate their 66th anniversary.

“This generous gift will help ensure that academically qualified students from Grand Marais or Cook County who are accepted to Macalester can attend, regardless of their family’s ability to pay full tuition,” said Brian Rosenberg, president. “We’re extraordinarily grateful for the generosity of the Hewitt children.”

Two students Patrick Holzman '11, and Madaline Cochrane '10, both from Grand Marais, are current scholarship recipients.

“This scholarship gift makes my dream to be a Macalester graduate possible,” said Cochrane. “When I graduate this spring, I know that I will take what I've learned in the Environmental Studies and Biology departments and combine it with my passion for the north woods to do great things.”

The scholarship fund is established as an endowment, and the expectation is that up to four $5,000 scholarships—one for each class—will be made annually by 2012. Consistent with the donor’s wishes, if there is no qualified student from Grand Marais or Cook County, the scholarship will be awarded to a student from another Minnesota rural town or county.

“It is our hope that this scholarship will inspire more talented students from northern Minnesota to strive to attend Macalester College, a top liberal arts college,” said daughter Candace Hewitt Leonard. “Our parents taught us the value of education and we’re honored to be able to share that value with our broader community.”
