Mayor Presents Second Sustainable Saint Paul Awards to Local Leaders in Environmental Action Schools, students, individuals, community organization receive recognition - April 16, 2008, Following the recognition the City’s first environmental stewardship and action awards brought to recipients in 2007, Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman and the City Council presented the City’s second Sustainable Saint Paul Awards on Wednesday. Minneapolis Student Wins 2008 MN State Geographic Bee – April 4, 2008 - The Cody DuBois, a seventh-grade student from Emerson Spanish Immersion Learning Center in Minneapolis, Minn., won first place in the 2008 Minnesota finals of the National Geographic Bee held today at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn. DuBois received a $100 cash prize and a globe. His teacher, Elizabeth Eposito, received a world atlas and a globe for the school.  more»

March 6 -- Macalester College Receives $13.5 Million Gift to Support International StudentsMacalester College today announced that it will receive a gift of $13.5 million from Philanthropist Shelby Moore Cullom Davis. Davis’s gift will provide scholarship support for international students and is the largest donation for this purpose in the college’s history. more»

Feb. 29, March 1 - 2 and 6 - 8, 2008 Macalester College Theater and Dance Department presents "The Threepenny Opera" by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, in the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center Main Stage Theater, 1600 Grand Avenue, St. Paul, Minn. Tickets are $10 general admission and $7 for seniors and groups, except for the Thursday, March 6 performance which will be “pay what you can,” and the matinee performance on March 2 will be $5 for everyone. Performances are Friday and Saturday, Feb. 29 and March 1, and Thursday - Saturday March 6 - 8 at 7:30 p.m. There is also a 2 p.m. performance on Sunday, March 2. Guest artist Gary Briggle directs. November 20 -- FRAMING THE BLACK PANTHERS: THE SPECTACULAR RISE OF A POWER ICON - by Macalester College Professor Jane Rhodes – When former Black Panther Minister of Information Eldridge Cleaver died in the summer of 1998, he received more press attention than many heads of state. On the front pages of The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post and San Francisco Chronicle, Cleaver was eulogized as a major icon of black nationalism as well as sixties culture and history. The Black Panthers have undeniably captured a place in the national imagination; four decades after the party’s demise, the group continues to inspire new stories, hip-hop artists, reality television, and enough films to justify a Black Panther Film Festival.  more»

October 29 -- During Nov., Macalester hosts “A Reason to Remember: Roth, Germany 1933-1942” Former Roth Resident to Speak Monday, Nov. 12th “A Reason to Remember: Roth, Germany 1933-1942,” tells the personal story of the five Jewish families who lived in the small village of Roth and brings history to life in an intimate and personal way through photographs, documents and eyewitness testimonies.  During the month of November, Macalester College is hosting the exhibit which introduces the families as they lived in 1933 and details what happened to them during the Nazi era. September 21 --Karl Marx Tours America to Clear his Name and Advocate Social Change – Macalester College will host the Twin Cities only performance of Howard Zinn’s play, “Marx in Soho” at 3 p.m. Sun., Sept. 30, 2007, Weyerhaeuser Memorial Chapel, 1600 Grand Ave., St. Paul, Minn. The play, which is free and open to the public, runs 75 minutes. A post-show panel discussion will follow the performance.
