Sarah Dart
Linguistics/Bilingualism
Dart specializes in acoustic and articulatory phonetics. She teaches courses in bilingualism, phonetics and the study of language. She has published a paper on bilingual children's language. In addition, Dart has done field work in India and published research on aspects of several languages including Korean and Hindi as well as a comparison of French and English.
John Haiman
Language/Sarcasm
Haiman specializes in alienation in language and sarcasm. He has been interviewed for numerous stories about slang, gossip and other aspects of language. His book, Talk Is Cheap: Sarcasm, Alienation and the Evolution of Language, was recently published. In addition, he researched syntactic change in Germanic languages, the grammar of the language of Papua New Guinea, Cambodia as well as aspects of the languages of Switzerland and Italy. Haiman was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1989 for the study of sarcasm.
