Diane Brown
Feminist Criticism/18th Century Literature
Brown specializes in feminist criticism and 18th century French literature. She earned her Ph.D. at Harvard in Romance languages and literatures with a specialization in 18th century French literature.
Anne Carayon
French Culture/Language/Art
Carayon is interested in contemporary aesthetics and as an artist, has exhibited her work in France and in the Twin Cities. She is currently working on a video documentary project on women immigrant artists in France. She teaches courses in arts and ideas in French culture, language courses and cultural trends in contemporary France.
Francoise Denis
Medieval and Renaissance Literature/Language
Denis specializes in Medieval and Renaissance literature and history as well as 17th century French literature. Her interests in the pre-19th century integrate the Medieval period with the historical and cultural developments of the following centuries.
She is currently working on building an international literary database with the Society for the Analysis of Topoi in Romances. In addition, she has published an intermediate French reader and has completed multimedia computer materials to teach French at various levels.
Annick Fritz-Smead
20th Century Literature/French Cinema
Fritz-Smead specializes in 20th century French literature and culture, with research interests in poetry, women writers and cinema. She has published a book on the poetry of Francis Ponge.
Virginia Schubert
19th Century Literature
Schubert is currently researching the 19th century French poet Marceline Desbordes-Valmor and 18th century painter Elisabeth Louise Vige Lebrun. She teaches 19th century literature, art and ideas in French culture and writing. Schubert has been promoted to the rank of officier in the Ordre des Palmes Acadmiques by the French government for her services to French culture.
Joelle Vitiello
20th Century Literature/Women Writers/ Francophone Studies
Vitiello specializes in contemporary women writing in French. She recently co-edited a book on women writers from the French-speaking Caribbean and is completing a book on the representations of friendship in contemporary literature written by women. She teaches courses in 20th century French literature, Franco-phone studies, as well as cultural trends in contemporary France.
