20th century Literature and Culture/Exile History

Abel specializes in 20th century German and Austrian film, literature and culture, with an amphasis on exile history and literature as well as German and American feminisms.

Ellis Dye

Romanticism/Modern Germany/Goethe

Dye teaches romanticism, modernism(Kafka, Hesse, Mann) and the avant garde as well as German philosophy, including Nietzche and Heidegger. He studies Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and is the book review editor of the Goethe Yearbook. He is writing a book called One and Double: Love and Death in Goethe.

Kiarina Kordela

Literature/Film/Philosophy

Kordela's teaching interests include critical theory and the relationship among literature, philosophy, cultural studies, mass culture and ideology. She has published on Freud, German-Jewish cultural studies and on E.T.A. Hoffmann. She is completing a book called, $: German Baroque in Global Capitalism.

Linda Schulte-Sasse

Propaganda/German and American Film

Schulte-Sasse specializes in film and cultural studies, German literature and the analysis of American political discourse. She teaches 18th and 20th century literature, cinema studies and is interested in the history and use of propaganda, rhetoric and film. She focuses on the German cinema, particularly during the era of National Socialism. Her latest book, Entertaining the Third Reich: Illusions of Wholeness in Nazi Cinema, examines Nazi films as movies containing propaganda, comparing them with classical Hollywood cinema. Schulte-Sasse also has written opinion pieces on Hollywood films and other issues for the Scripps-Howard News Service and the Star Tribune newspaper.
