David Itzkowitz
Europe/Jewish Identity and History/Victorian Period
Itzkowitz is knowledgeable about modern British, European and Jewish history as well as Victorian society. His interests include early 19th century Europe and the creation of modern Jewish identity. He has written essays on a variety of subjects including the concept of religious freedom as it applied to Jews of Western Europe in the 19th century as well as Victorian social history, particularly the history of leisure.
Teresita Martinez-Vergne
Latin American History
Martinez-Vergne is a social historian of Latin America with an interest in disourses on progress in late 19th century Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Her research focuses on the workings of gender and race on notions of citizenship within the discourse of nationalism. Her latest book is Shaping the Discourse on Space, Charity and its Wards in 19th Century San Juan, Puerto Rico. Other publications deal with the transition from slave to wage labor in the Puerto Rican sugar industry and women of color in the Caribbean. Martinez-Vergne is a member of the Association of Caribbean Historians and served as the co-editor of volume 5 of the UNESCO History of the Caribbean. entitled The Contemporary Caribbean.
Norm Rosenberg
Recent U.S. History/Legal History
Rosenberg specializes in 20th century U.S. history. He is the co-author of several books including In Our Time: America Since 1945. In addition, Rosenberg is an expert in legal culture and history with an emphasis on First Amendment issues and post-structural history. He heads the college's Legal Studies Program and is on the editorial board of Legal Studies Forum. He is writing an essay on 20th century legal culture and is working on a book called The Reconstruction of Free-Speech Discourse, 1940-1964.
Paul Solon
European and French History/World War II/Guerilla Warfare
Solon is interested in the period before the Industrial Revolution and teaches courses in European history with an emphasis on law, politics and warfare. His research focuses on the social organization, institutional structure and political usage of armed force in Valois, France, between the Hundred Years War and the Wars of Religion. He is also a resource on events during and after World War II and on guerilla warfare.
James Stewart
Early American History/Slavery/Abolitionists/ Historical Reenactments
Stewart specializes in early American history including the Revolution, Civil War and Reconstruction, and frontier and environmental history. His courses involve political and social history with an emphasis on regional and development politics, the problems of "races," labor system and racial formation. Stewart can discuss congressional history as well as the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson. He also is an expert on the anti-slavery movement in the U.S., including the politics of conflict over slavery and struggles for racial justice. He has written several books on the subject including Holy Warriors:
The Abolitionists and American Slavery. A new book, To Heal the Scourge of Prejudice, on the life and writings of African American abolitionist Hosea Easton, was recently released. In addition, Stewart can discuss the significance and popularity of historical reenactments.
Yue-him Tam
Chinese and Japanese History/Hong Kong
Tam specializes in the history of China and Japan. He is currently working on the intellectual development of modern Japan and cultural interactions in modern East Asia, including Sino-Japanese relations. He is also a resource on Hong Kong and the transfer of power from Great Britain to China. Tam has published several books, including Hong Kong and Japan: Growing Cultural and Economic Interactions, 1845-1987, and Studies in Modern Sino-Japanese Cultural Relations. He publishes in Chinese, Japanese and English. Tam also serves on several national and international organizations including the Global Alliance for Preserving the History of World War II in Asia and the Pacific and the Chinese Association for Japanese Historical Studies.
