Edouard Forner
Symphony/Electronic Music
Forner directs the Macalester Symphony Orchestra and is the music director and conductor of the St. Paul Civic Symphony. He teaches electronic music and trains young conductors. His research interests include electronic music and the application of group psychology theory to training performing ensembles.
Jan Gilbert
Music Theory and Composition
Gilbert teaches music theory and composition. She has directed an experimental music ensemble that specialized in "speech music" and multimedia compositions. She is currently interested in south Indian music and interactive composition.
Carleton Macy
Music Theory/Composition/Music Education
Macy is a prize-winning composer who has created more than 100 works that have been performed internationally. His music for pianos and flutes, "Reflections," was released on the INNOVA label by the American Composers Forum. Another major work for large wind ensemble, "Summer Solstice," was performed by the University of Georgia Wind Ensemble. The Paris-based saxophone quartet, 4UATRE, released two CDs featuring Macy's "Faust" concerto for alto saxophone and sring orchestra. In addition, Macy has been a performer, conductor and composer with the Minnesota Chinese Music Ensemble, which specializes in traditional and contemporary music written for Chinese instruments. He teaches theory and competition. He also directs several Macalester music groups.
Mark Mazullo
Music History/19th and 20th Century Music
Mazullo teaches music history and literature as well as music theory. His research interests include 19th century music and 20th century popular music. He recently published aritcles on Kurt Cobain and Raidiohead for Musical Quarterly.
Sowah Mensah
African Music/World Music
Mensah is a master drummer from Ghana, who is also an ethnomusicologist and a composer. Mensah teaches African music, jazz and social issues, and the music of African Americans. He directs the Macalester African Music Ensemble. In addition, Mensah has performed with the Minnesota Orchestra and internationally known artists. Mensah also helped Minnesota state agencies develop a new music curriculum which includes the teaching of world music for K-12 grade students.
Robert Morris
African American Music/Choral
Morris, a composer/arranger, is the conductor of choral activities at the college, including the Macalester Concert Choir and the Festival Chorale. He is an authority on the music of African Americans, especially choral and religious music. Based on his previous experience as a choral arranger for the late "Duke" Ellington, Morris participated in an institute on "Jazz: The Rediscovery of African American Authenticity." He recently co-directed a national Ellington celebration in Chicago. He also is the founder and conductor of the Leigh Morris Chorale.
Robert Peterson
American Musical Theater
Peterson is the chair of the college's Music Department. He teaches a course on American musical theater. He was elected Minnesota Choral Director of the Year in 1994. Peterson is also a primary consultant for the Smart Music solo voice accompaniment program developed by Coda Music Technologies.
