Franklin Adler

European Politics/Fascism

Adler specializes in political and social theory and comparative politics in Europe. He is the author of Italian Industrialists From Liberalism to Fascism which traces the development of industrial associations in Italy from 1906-1934 and challenges traditional interpretations of the rise of fascism. He is currently working on

a major manuscript on Thinking Beyond Antiracism, as well as projects on the European radical right and issues in the liberal-communitarian debate.

David Blaney

Global Politics and Culture

Blaney's research focuses on political theory and the political economy of international relations. He teaches courses on international politics as well as global political economy and development.

Julie Dolan

U.S. Politics/Federal Bureaucracy/Women in Politics

An expert on American politics, Dolan's research focuses on inter-governmental relations and policy making. She has published numerous articles and papers on the federal bureaucracy and on women and politics.

Chuck Green

Research Methods

Green is researching decision-support systems, science technology and education policies. He teaches courses in political theory and research methods and public policy. He received the Educator of the Year Award in 1997 from the Rotary Club of St. Paul. He was also the 1997 recipient of the Macalester Excellence in Teaching Award.

Duchess Harris

African American Political Movements/

Black Public Intellectuals

Harris' research interests include U.S. politics, particularly African American political movements. For example, she has been interviewed about the role of African Americans in the 2000 elections. She teaches courses on race, ethnicity and politics, African American political thought and black public intellectuals. Harris also can discuss race and gender issues as well as class issues within the African American community. In addition, she teaches a course on health policy issues.

Harry Hirsch

Constitutuional Law/Civil Liberties

Hirsch specializes in constitutional law and jurisprudence as well as American political thought. He is an expert on civil liberties and gay and lesbian politics. He is currently working on a study of attitudes toward politics and law among members of sexual minority groups in American cities including the Twin Cities. In addition, Hirsch has written about and can discuss the electoral college system, the Supreme Court, the First Amendment and other issues.

George Latimer

Politics/Urban Issues /Housing

Urban Studies Program

As the former mayor of St. Paul, Latimer specializes in electoral politics, the relationship between federal and local governments, and public administration. Latimer is interested in welfare reform and is a member of the Urban Institute's Policy Advisory Board on Assessing the New Federalism. He also serves on the advisory panel of the Robert Wood Johnson National Urban Health Initiative, which is addressing the welfare of children in five U.S. cities. In addition, he is the former CEO of the Chicago-based National Equity Fund, which organizes partnerships among corporations that invest in affordable rental housing developed by nonprofit groups. He also served as a top aide to the secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Latimer can discuss a wide variety of topics including urban development, affordable housing, jobs, poverty and crime.

Roger Mosvick

Political Rhetoric/Corporate Communications

Mosvick is an analyst of political rhetoric and has analyzed some of former President Clinton's major speeches. He also has been a political speech writer. He currently specializes in corporate communications and is the co-author of We've Got to Start Meeting Like This: A Guide to Successful Business Meeting Management.

Clay Steinman

Political Advertising/Media Coverage

Communication and Media Studies Department

Steinman is an expert on the role advertising and media coverage in political campaigns, including presidential races, the election of Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura and Paul Wellstone's U.S. Senate race. He has also analyzed the effectiveness of campaign advertising, discussing issues such as the role of negative advertising on election outcomes. In addition, he has discussed the use of advertising during labor strikes at Northwest Airlines and U.S. West. Steinman specializes in media and film issues including news media coverage, television viewing habits and stereotypes in Hollywood films. His research interests include the impact of television and film on culture, and racism and Hollywood film. He is co-author of the book, Consuming Environments: Television and Commercial Culture.
