Fa La La La La (La La La La)

WMCN is now off the air for winter break. Thank you to all our DJs, staff, and listeners for an excellent semester, and a very special thanks to all those artists who came to our humble station this fall to play a live set. We'll be doing more of this in the months to come.

Check back here during the break for expanded audio and video content, and in January for information about spring semester DJ applications. New charts coming soon, as soon as CMJ overcomes their web difficulties.

'Tis the season for some top ten love. Read our blog.

HALEY BONAR!

St. Paul beauty and singer-songwriter extraordinaire Haley Bonar will be dropping by the station for a live performance at 8 pm this evening. Finally, a sequel to her enchanting performance in the Campus Center three years ago, when I was a lowly first-year and all my guy friends seemed to have a crush on her. Tune in! The webcast works.

Speaking of that Haley Bonar performance in 2005...Eric Anderson opened then, and only three days ago, he played our fall concert in the art gallery in support of Caroline Smith and the Good Night Sleeps. That show was a great success and bodes well for future station-sponsored events outside of the studio.

Here are some photos from the Big Quarters performance on WMCN last month. More can be found in our gallery.

Take notes from our blog.

WMCN Presents...

Live in Macalester's art gallery tonight, starting at 10 pm:

Caroline Smith and the Good Night Sleeps

Cataldo (featuring Mac grad Eric Anderson)

Fun will be had!

Also, here's one more for the archives, Kritical Kontact on WMCN on November 14.

Our long-gestating reviews section is in the process of being constructed, with high quality materials from our newsletter and elsewhere. Take a peek!

Archivin'

Click the links for two more recent live performances in the WMCN studios: Green Sketch (September 26) and JSL from 301 Studios (November 7), who was kind enough to play a set even when his pal Rek the Heavyweight couldn't make it. Up next: Kritical Kontact tomorrow at 8 p.m., and Margaret Stutt from 10 a.m. to noon on November 16.

All of our archived in-station performances can now be found in one place. How convenient!

Our webcast has been hit-or-miss recently. We're working on it. Continued apologies...

Charlie Parr is here...

...in the form of an mp3. Listen to last month's fantastic in-station performance right here. Don't forget new charts and a new edition of Liner Notes, featuring a WMCN rock director tell-all. This and all future copies can also be found in the periodical racks outside Cheapo!

We hope to have webcast difficulties resolved soon. Sorry for the interruption.

Up Next

Upcoming live performances in the WMCN station:

REK THE HEAVYWEIGHT (Spawn from Atmosphere): November 7th, 8-10 p.m.

KRITICAL KONTACT: November 14th, 8-10 p.m.

Check out new charts, in which The Replacements make an appearance for the first time in decades, probably (but not for new material). J Mascis has also returned.

Big Quarters on WMCN. Listen right here.

A new edition of Liner Notes will be arriving on shelves and blogs tomorrow (and maybe at Cheapo too)!

As Seen On Blog

The great Charlie Parr played a one hour set in the station on Sunday, and here are the video clips to prove it. Here he is with a song called "Come Along and See":

This one's lower resolution, but its Charlie Parr index is very high. It's called "Last Payday at Coal Creek":

That's WMCN's own Andrew Berger introducing Mr. Parr out of view of the camera. Andrew could write a much more knowledgeable appreciation of the man's music than I could muster, so I won't attempt it. More video and audio coming soon.

Big audio dynamite

Here's the promised audio from last Friday's live performance by Sarah Johnson in the WMCN studio. More stuff coming soon. We'll also be hosting the legendary Charlie Parr in the station this Sunday, so stay tuned for that.

The Word Is Out

Listen in for two more live performances from the WMCN studio tomorrow (Friday) night. Around 7 pm, Twin Cities band Sarah Johnson will be dropping by for DJ Arella Vargas' local rock show, and hip-hop group Green Sketch will grace the airwaves during Music Director Nolan Levenson's show from 8-10 pm. Check back here in the coming days for video and audio from the performances.

Inaugural Live Performance

Twin Cities singer songwriter Jeremy Messersmith dropped by the station last night for a special live performance. We videotaped the whole thing, and one song already "leaked" on YouTube (see above, and pardon the extraneous noise). We hope to post more video and audio soon, and of course, this is only the first in a series of in-station shows that WMCN will be hosting throughout the year. Don't miss Jeremy at the Varsity Theater this Thursday for his CD release show.

Also, check out our fall semester program guide, and our first CMJ charts of the new radio year. DJs, let us know if you see any problems with your program guide description.
