Season Ends at Central Regionals

Macalester closed out its season – and its Nordic skiing varsity program – at the NCAA Central Regional championships Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 28-29) in Houghton, Michigan.  The Macalester women placed sixth out of 10 teams in the combined team scores, while the Mac men placed seventh out of eight.

The Macalester women had their best performance of the season.  Emily Stafford (So., Burnsville, MN) led the way for the Scots in the 5K freestyle and Renee Schaefer (Sr., Waukesha, WI / North) paced the team in the 10K classical race.  In Saturday’s freestyle race, Stafford placed 31st out of 44 finishers with a 16:28 time.  That was 10th best among Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference skiers.  Schaefer placed 32nd at 16:41.  Schaefer led the way by placing 28th out of 46 (and ninth among the MIAC racers) in Saturday’s classical race.  She completed the course in 1:01.52.  Stafford was 35th at 1:05.20 and Julia Parke (FY, Richmond, VT / Mt. Mansfield Union) placed 36th at 1:06.17.

Macalester’s men’s team was led in Saturday’s 10K freestyle by Dan Risch-Boody (FY, Minneapolis, MN / South), who placed 36th with a time of 29:47.  In Sunday’s 15K classical, the Scots were paced by Ari Ofsevit (So., Newtonville, MA / Newton North), who placed 34th with a 1:15.20 clocking.

Men – Alaska-Fairbanks 167, Northern Michigan 161, Wisconsin-Green Bay 122, Gustavus 109, Michigan Tech 97, St. Olaf 93, St. John’s 89, Macalester 39, Finlandia 15.

Women – Northern Michigan 168, Alaska-Fairbanks 162, Wisconsin-Green Bay 128, Gustavus 112, St. Olaf 95, Macalester 66, Michigan Tech 66, St. Cloud State 60, St. Benedict 51, Finlandia 4.
