January 17-18 2004 -- Macalester’s cross country ski team raced at the CCSA / NCAA regional qualifier Saturday and Sunday at Mt. Itasca near Coleraine, Minnesota.  The women placed seventh and the men placed sixth.  Division I teams Alaska-Fairbanks, Wisconsin-Green Bay and Northern Michigan competed, along with St. Cloud State and the four Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) programs.

Emily Stafford (So., Burnsville, MN) led the way for the Scots with solid races in the women’s freestyle and classical events.  Stafford placed 32nd out of 46 finishers in the 10-kilometer classic (39:08) and 22nd out of 34 in the 5Km freestyle (18:25).  She was the 11th best MIAC finisher in the classic race and 10th in the freestyle.

Renee Schaefer (Sr., Waukesha, WI / North) was Mac’s No. 2 finisher in the 10K classic, placing 34th (39:28).  Mac’s second racer in the 5K freestyle was Julia Parke (FY, Richmond, VT / Mt. Mansfield Union), who placed 24th overall (18:29).  

Dan Risch-Boody (FY, Minneapolis, MN / South) paced the Macalester men both days.  Risch-Boody placed 28th in the 10K freestyle (32:39) and 43rd in the 15K classical (53:43).

The Scots go to Cable, Wisconsin, this Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 24-25) for an NCAA qualifier race at Telemark Lodge.
