attendance and participation |
The only
way to learn a language is to use the language. Given your goals of good
communicative proficiency, regular attendance and preparation are essential.
Class time will be designed for active learning
and practice. You will work with other students in class on such tasks as
interviewing, reporting, describing, narrating, and so forth. To use the
class time effectively, you must actively participate in activities. ÔRegular attendanceÕ means coming to
class all the time. You are
given points for class participation, and missing class means forfeiting
these points. If illness or emergencies keep you out of class, contact your instructor
by phone or e-mail prior to class meetings in order to arrange to make up the missed work. More than 4
absences – including any absences from the lab (see below) – will
result in a half-grade reduction to
your final grade; more than 6 in a full-grade reduction; and more than 8 in a failing grade. The only exceptions to this rule are medical and
family emergencies that have been cleared with the Dean of Students.
|
||||||||||||||||||
|
|
|
||||||||||||||||||
|
homework |
You will be
assigned homework from the main textbook and from the Arbeitsbuch (workbook). The answers to most exercises are in
the back of the two books. You should always check your answers with these
answer keys. If you find you are making mistakes and donÕt understand why, bring
it up at the beginning of the next class or discuss it with one
of the tutors at the German department prior to the class for which they are assigned. It is essential to
your progress that unclear points be cleared up early on. So speak up! Do the exercises on the day
they are assigned; they are scheduled to
solidify material presented in the previous or current class session. |
||||||||||||||||||
|
|
|
||||||||||||||||||
|
textbook assignments |
The
assignments will include sections of the purple grammar pages (ÒStrukturenÓ);
you should study these very carefully until you have understood and learned
the material, not just read through them. You will also be assigned †bungen in the purple pages, and on occasion other tasks
from the main pages of the textbook. Some of these are marked ÒeinzureichenÓ
(to be turned in) on the syllabus; these are to be turned in at the beginning
of class on the day they are due. Audio files for textbook exercises are on the Moodle page for this course (look
under ÒTextbook Audio ProgramÓ). Practice the assigned homework until the
point you can reproduce the structures or vocabulary practiced
orally, as you will be asked
to do so in class. Vocabulary: Each chapter of the main textbook contains a
section called ÒWortschatzÓ (vocabulary). Use this list to review
the vocabulary you learned in class and in homework (not to learn it). It contains
the most important words introduced in each chapter and which you are most
expected to know. |
||||||||||||||||||
|
|
|
||||||||||||||||||
|
workbook assignments |
Do the exercises in pencil or in blue or black ink, then check your answers using the answer key in the back of the workbook, correcting your mistakes in red ink (or some contrasting color). Draw a red line in the margin next to any exercises for which there are no answers in the key (I will correct these myself). Make sure you mark any exercises that are completely correct somehow, so that I know you have corrected them. Audio files are on the Moodle page for this course under ÒWorkbook Audio Files.Ó I will check your workbook on
the days you have a test (There is a test at the end of each chapter). Write
your name on your workbook and turn it in at the beginning of the test day. |
||||||||||||||||||
|
|
|
||||||||||||||||||
|
conversation hour |
In addition to our regular
three meetings a week, you are required to attend a mandatory fourth session
– the ÒlabÓ – in which you will work on oral skills in small,
more informal groups with a native speaker of German. If you have not signed
up for a lab session, you must do so during the first week of classes. Lab sessions begin the second week of the
semester. Missed lab sessions cannot be made up, although in emergency cases
you may be able to arrange with your lab session leader to attend a different
session on a one-time basis. Absences in the lab count as absences
in the course as a whole (see above for consequences!).
In terms of grading, each lab session counts for one point. These points will be awarded on the basis of active participation and preparation for the lab. Just as in the regular session of the course, you need to come to lab prepared and ready to join in the conversation and activities. |

|
|
|
||||||||||||||||||
|
co-curricular activities |
In order to encourage you to
explore a variety of German-related activities and events beyond your
immediate course, you are required to attend two German Studies Department
activities in the course of the semester. I will be announcing these events as they come up and providing links on the syllabus and Moodle to these events. Remember these are fun events for you to explore German: you can eat cake and drink coffee at the German House, attend an extra film, go to a lecture, eat lunch with other German-speakers at the Stammtisch, etc. ALL department events are open
to you. Please inform me by email when you attend a co-curricular activity.

evaluation
|
Because langauge learning involves a wide variety of activities, you will earn course points for every aspect of your work. Any time you would like to know how you are doing in the class, feel free to contact me and we can figure out how many points you have earned so far. I will also provide regular progress reports to help you assess your work in the course. Here is the distribution of points for each of the evaluated activities:
IMPORTANT: A Ò0Ó IN ANY ONE AREA WILL RESULT IN A FULL-GRADE REDUCTION. A Ò0Ó IN ANY TWO AREAS WILL RESULT IN A FAILING GRADE. A C OR BETTER IS NECESSARY FOR CONTINUING INTO GERMAN 102. |

assistance outside of class |
I am here to help you, so if you have any questions or need assistance, please come to see me. You can call me, come by my office hours, or make an appointment in advance. Dropping by my office outside of office hours without an appointment is ill-advised, since you may miss me or catch me in preparation for another course. The German Department offers tutoring for free. If you have difficulties understanding the material, make use of the tutors. The tutor's schedule is available at the German Department. |

accommodation for students with disabilities |
I am committed to providing
assistance to help you be successful in this course. Reasonable
accommodations are available for students with documented disabilities. Please
meet with the Associate Dean of Students, Lisa Landreman, who will serve as
the coordinator for services for students with disabilities. It is important
to meet with her at the beginning of the semester to ensure that your
accommodations are approved and in place to begin the semester
successfully. The Associate Dean can be reached in the Office of
Student Affairs, 119 Weyerhaeuser, by phone at 651-696-6220, or email llandrem@macalester.edu. |

The syllabus gives a plan of the semester and may be altered as the need arises. Changes will be announced in class. Again, when you miss a class, always check with me about possible changes to the syllabus. |
