The climate of Europe at the time
Princess Elizabeth lived was one of discovery and revolution. The 17th century is considered
the beginning of the Age of Enlightenment.
The Renaissance had just finished, and the Baroque period started
about 1650. Many people had been upset
by the huge advancements made in the sciences, especially since Newton’s Principia Mathematica, Galileo’s
discovery of Jupiter’s moon, and Kepler’s laws governing the motion of a
heliocentric universe. Many began to
believe that science held the answer to life, rather than religion, and
thought that once science had explained everything, the mysteries of the
universe would be solved.
Consequently, many philosophers arose out of this movement. It is also the beginning of the Early
Modern Period in philosophy. |
