Teaching

I teach immunology and cell biology at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN.  I am currently developing a course in community and global health.  I have started a consortium of local immunology and cell biology faculty.  We are working on developing teaching materials centered around using flow cytometry in undergraduate biology education. I have a strong interest in incorporating civic engagement in biology and health/medicine-related courses.

Research

I study the development of T cells in mice - the early stages in the bone marrow (in collaboration with Professor Marcos Garcia-Ojeda at UC Merced) and the later stages in the thymus.  I am also involved in a collaborative project studying the role of immune cells in inflammatory pain with Professors Lin Aanonsen at Macalester and Steve Galli at Stanford University.  Collaboration with undergraduate students is central to all my research endeavors (see Research section of this website).  If you are interested in research opportunities or a work study position in my laboratory, please contact me.

Professional activities

I serve on the national education committee of the American Association of Immunologists.  I am also the co-chair of the governing board of Laura Jeffrey Academy - a girl-focused STEM-oriented charter school in Saint Paul.  At Macalester, I co-direct the interdisciplinary program in Community and Global Health and serve on the Health Professions Advisory Committee. I am a member of Macalester’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
