New work as of Dec 2002!
We are finally moving on to plan work on remodelling the first
floor. The first step in that endeaver is to move the stairs to the basement
to the middle of the house. We are honing on the floorplans that we really
like and they all focus on reclaiming the SW corner of the first floor to
have as usable kitchen space. In order to do that we have to make the stairs
in the middle of the house usable.
I have started loading thumbnails instead of large pictures.

Don and Miller getting ready to wreck stuff up. We have gotten comments
on Miller not looking too sober here. Really he is. We did not embibe
until after... the first part. This is just how he looks these days. Something
like a priate grimmace or something. Be sure and give him crap about it. |

and Miller actually tearing stuff up.
I took a couple of digital movies with my camera. They are not the
best but they give an idea of the fun that we were able to have.

Winter 2000
As as result of me deciding to not have a professional plumber do the plumbing
I flooded the basement. The floor drain has been plugged since I bought
the house and it was always one of those things further down on my list of
things to do. Well because of that the water level in the basementgot
to about 3' deep. In case you are wondering this is just over thetop
of the boiler (the furnace if you have hot water heat in your house).
I just called the St. Paul Water Utility and the meter reading states that
I used 70 units of water. There are 748 gallons in a unit, so that
means that I used 52,360 gallons of water on that mistake. Kinda negates
all the eco-friendly things you try and to to conserve water like low volume
toilets. So, we had to replace the boiler and probably the washer and
dryer and the water heater.

I know it is not the best photo but you can just make out that there is at
least a couple inches of standing water by the time that I collected myself
to the point that I thought to take a photo.

Don (the super-hero of this house project), my dad and Sarah ganging up on
the new boiler. Just like the plumbing decision, most of the bids that
I got for a pro to install a boiler were around $5000. Well I called
around and ended up buying a boiler for $1200 and we installed it ourselves.
Not necessarily an easy endeavor but I now know an awful lot about boilers.
AND more about plumbing. Test your plumbing work with AIR first.
If you do not know how, email me and I will explain the inexpensive kit that
I designed and now use.

Of course the boiler did not go in without a fight. At this point we
had filled the system with water, and had to drain it again because we found
one joint that did not get any solder. It had been a long week and
Sarah shows it.
