Second Floor

When we bought the house I had been telling people that we only need to do a couple of weeks of work on the second floor, then we can move in.  Then we could work on the first floor and make that livable.  Well we started on one thing and found the mess underneath the bathroom floor and thought, well... we could do that in a few years or we could do it now while no one is living there.  Then we tore out the stairwell, then we converted the living room with a fireplace in it into a bedroom, then we tore out the full length smoked mirror and found that used to be the door,  etc.etc. etc.   So now we hope to move in by spring sometime.

Updates:

3-15-02 - We've moved in and are on hold for most of the projects.

don and sarah
Don and Sarah take a break in the "ballroom".  Note the oh so lovely full wall bookshelves and the semi-circle on the floor from where the raised floor used to be and the white area is all where the concrete was on the hardwood floor.
miller on the stairs
Here is Scott Miller bouncing the washing machine down the stairs.
Orange tub
Unearthing the Orange TUB.
Don vs Orange tub
Orange Tub vs. Sawzall
Nikki with tub
Here is Nikki about to heave the orange tub out the window into the dumpster.
Lloyd with orange tub Here you can get an idea of the original layout.  You would have to walk up the stairs on the right and then turn left to get into the bathroom.  The gaping whole that allows you to see the tub from this angle used to be a wall with built-in cherry cabinets and cupboards.  We are going to re-use them in the space that we added in the kitchen.
Bath babes
Here Sarah is standing where the orange tub used to be and Erin is doing some sort of bathroom-demolition-dance.  See the mess of wires to the left of the frame it was about five times worse on the other side of the cavity under the bathroom floor when we looked in there.  Obviously the owner that remodeled the house previously did all his own electrical work.
dad and demo
Here is my dad shortly after I convinced him that we should tear out the rear stairwell.
Nowak
Here is Jon Nowak standing at the precipice of what used to be the rear stair well.  Note the large window that would have been in the cramped and dirty stairwell.  There is another one to the left of it and both are now in the kitchen area.
Monica and studs
Here is Monica framing up the new space that we gained in the kitchen by removing the stairwell.  Notice all the light coming in those windows.
Sarah in the kitchen
Here is a view into the kitchen.  Pretty cozy but long-term it will be a bathroom or something.  Sarah is cleaning up after we sandblasted the radiators.  Yes, we sandblasted the radiators without taking them outside.  Talk about a mess!!
Lloyd and kitch
Here I am with a view into the kitchen before we tore most of the floor that you can see and the stairs and the bathroom out.  Also that is the window that we used to heave 2 dumpsters full of stuff out of.
Tara
Here is Tara, also one of the super helpers of this project.
Scott and ShtRck
Not the best picture of Scott, but he is with his best friend; Sheet Rock.
Sarah and Lloyd do plumbing
Here Sarah and I are working on some plumbing fixtures.
Lloyd and Sarah
Did I mention that we tore out ALL of the plumbing in the house and are re-doing it all ourselves?!
Sarah and Lloyd
More plumbing and Scott in the background.
acrobatic sanding
Scott doing some acrobatic sanding.
Brotherly Love
Oh for brotherly love.

3-15-02

Well, we moved in a little less than a year ago. Here are some updated pictures since then.

Here is the new SouthWest corner of the kitchen. Lots of light, I touched up the color a littel bit to try and recreate the subtle lavender paint that we put in there that my $25 digital camera had trouble recreating, but you kinda get the idea.

Here is the new floor above the hole that Jon was peering into. It is not so ealy installing hardwood floors by yourself. If you do, be sure to take some days off work the next week to recouperate, and be sure to get instructions from Pete's Hardwood Floors.

This is right about where Jon Nowak was standing just a few frames above. We took one some of the built-in cabinets, chopped them down and they fit perfectly in this nook in the kitchen. So we still have cherry built-ins. Oh, and of cours lots of pottery around.

Recent shot of the new bathroom door(sans trim) and a wonderful example of Scotty's Art hanging in the house.
