Computing.
History, interesting facts, and stories culled from around the web.
January, 1995 Article from Byte magazine declaring the Internet obsolete &
useless: "Who Needs the Internet?"
My personal favorite programs (Windows 95/98 except where noted)
, an alternative web browser that is pretty damn good. It's small and
fast, and doesn't crash or take over your computer. Norweigans wrote it,
but you may use it even if you're not Norweigan. Shareware. Multiple
platforms.
Zip file utilities:
, PKZIP 2.50 for DOS, a must-have DOS zip/unzip utility. Shareware.
Supports long filenames.
,PKZIP 2.04g, DOS, doesn't have long filename support, but has been field-tested
for many years, and is pretty much bullet-proof. That 'g' means 7revisions,
and 2.50 isn't even on 'a' yet. Think about it.
I think the best Zip/Unzip utility out there is
PowerArchiver. It is FREEWARE and does everything Winzip does,
but doesn't ever nag you to register it. It doesn't even have ads.
IvanPetrovic seemslike a decent
fellow to write great software like thisand just give it away. Superior
software: context menu support, create self-extracting files, reads any format
out there, etc. etc.

OK, there you go. On to the rest of the html.
,a
shareware text editor. Absolutely worth the price, this program has superior
search & editing capabilities.
,a
FREEWARE equivalent of the Unix PS command. See what's really
running on your machine, and kill it too!
, a FREEWARE taskbar clock enhancement. Shows more info.
Small & very worth it!
Tera Term Pro, a FREEWARE telnet program. I've tried dozens
and like this one the best. Small & fast, I think you'll like it too.
Tarsier,a 32k FREEWARE
utility that sits in your system tray & allows for quick screen-saver activation.
Copy it to your windows directory, make a shortcut to it in your startup group,
and you're good to go. One executable, no DLLs.
WsPing32,a FREEWARE
(for education) Windows 95/98 Ping, Traceroute and NSLookup utility. Handy
and small. One executable, no DLLs.
Jorj!, a DOSdictionary
program. FAST!, handy (maybe even indispensable) and small, Jorj! features a
surprisingly large number of words, and will find a word even when you spell
it incorrectly.
Alex's FTP Server
,a FREEWARE FTP server for Windows 95/98. It's not perfect, but
it's small and free, and you don't have to restart your computer to install
it. Easy to setup users/directories/rights, and easy to shut down. Great
for occassional use.
Windows 95 Powertoys
. If you use Windows 95 (not 98, it has its own set),you must install
these. FREE from Microsoft. Self-extracting EXE.
Windows 98 Powertoys.
Same deal as above, but for Windows 98. FREE from Microsoft.
Self-extracting EXE.
Partition Manager .FREEWARE. Small
compact, easy to use & powerful. Move / resize partitions with ease.
Another piece of first-class software.
Wrapper.FREEWARE
. DOS. This magnificent utility allows you to load and run programs/TSRs,
including batch files, in your config.sys.
Blat. FREEWARE
. Win95/98/NT Command-line SMTP mailer. Supports attachments
& much more. Superior software. One executable, no DLLs.
StupidFax.FREEWARE. Win95/98/NT/2000.
Really, it is called Stupidfax. StupidFaxis a small and incredibly simple
program for receiving a fax and printing it out. That's all it does.
If you're like me and only rarely need to receive a fax, this is the program
for you. Read the entertaining readme file for Stupidfax
here.
