The Man Who Heard the Land hears more than a message of stewardship. He hears himself. He hears his wife. He hears NOW. He hears something like the subconscious. He also hears his heritage, or part of his heritage, which is probably Native American. The novel also is about loss of heritage and its effects. The man who heard the land hears many other things which is summed up in one of the last passages of the book: "It got back to the land. The land was his work. He heard its unanswerable questions, its mysteries, its conflicts. He heard the force of its ties. Its implication. Its patterns and relationships. When he head the land, he knew he was hearing underlying principles that bound his life. They were there, almost inaudible, something like a heart-beat." (156 pages)
