Advising

I have been designated as your academic adviser. You may chose another adviser, and most likely you'll do it, once you decide on your major by the end of your second year. Some points and tips:

  • Don't hesitate to ask for help! We don't expect you to function perfectly in a college environment or master all your courses easily from day one. Like other Mac professors, I want to keep in close contact with my students, I want to know about your thoughts and experiences, and I'll try to be responsive to your concerns. I want you to have a great academic experience, starting from year one!
  • Try to see me during my office hours (M & W 2:20-3:20) or set an appointment. Otherwise I may be busy with other commitments or other students. You can leave a voice message on my office (696-6556) or home phone (698-7947) and I check my e-mail regularly.
  • Use me as a resource for matters pertaining to our course or the Russian literature field in general, as well as your first-year academic experience. I won't have answers for everything, but will try to direct you to people or other campus offices who can help you solve specific problems I don't have answers for.
  • Learn how to help yourself and take advantage of your own resourcefulness as well as campus resources. The college catalogue, for instance, is packed with pertinent information--read it! The Max Center is there for you! The registrar (6200) can best answer your questions about academic rules, if the catalogue isn't clear to you.
  • Try to manage your time efficiently and get into good study habits. You'll find that college means a lot of work--our course is no exception. You don't want to fall behind in this or any of your other courses.

I've entered the initial advising procedures on your schedule. Contact me during the semester if you have any concerns. At about the midpoint of the semester I'll check in with you as a class and also suggest individual appointments as needed. The registration for spring classes will start on Nov 13, but first-year students are usually scheduled towards the end of the registration period. At that point I'll want to see all of you and discuss your plans, in fact you'll need my clearance before you can registe--but more about that later!.
