The Urals and the Caucasus"

Tr. Gitta Hammarberg from Shaduri, Vano, Russkie pisateli o Gruzii, vol. 1, Tbilisi, Zaria, 1948, pp.419-20 (no attempt at preserving poetic elements).

The Ural Mountains and the Caucasus got into an argument
And the Urals said: "The world knows us!
I am rich in gold, rich in silver,
In diamond and jasper and all good things;
From my womb treasures are extracted
And many treasures are still hidden in it!
I pay rich taxes to people:
I caress, silver, and gild their life!
Is it for the Caucasus to be my equal:
He is a beggar and hides brigandage from beggars!"
--Shut up, you despicable creature! Exclaimed the Caucasus
I am a doctor, a true believer: the world knows us!
Riches give rise to ailments and vices,
People are healed by Caucasian currents;
I heal the ailing inhabitants of the valley;
I love the mighty mountain inhabitants;
To the former I restore health and life
For the latterÑI preserve both freedom and peace;
In ancient times I was the first to give Noah a haven:
Since then people know me, love me, and respect me!
