TIME TABLE:
FORMAT: The usual academic humanities format with full bibliography and notes as needed (cite all the works you've used!), typed in 12-point Word document. I'll post instuctions if someone still needs them--let me know! You may turn them in by e-mail attachments (compatible with a macIntosh computer, please). Russian text (quotes, words, etc.) may be written in Cyrillic or transliterated into Latin script. CONTENT: The idea is that you'll produce a research paper on some topic related to Pushkin's Eugene Onegin. Those of you who haven't read it may want to skim through it once fast in English to get a general idea of the work. Our schedule page also contains a wide range of topics chapter by chapter that I have suggested for the oral presentations/short written projects. You can address the novel's "literariness": some aspect of its form (meter, rhyme, literary tropes and figures (such as metaphors, allusions to other works, etc.) or some especially interesting devices Pushkin uses (e.g. narrator's digressions, repetition of situations, plays with epic conventions, self-referentiality (to writing "this" work). Or perhaps some aspect of characterization or setting (what imagery is used to represent Lensky? How does Pushkin describe the geography of Moscow? What features of the interiors does he foocus on? How does food imagery function artistically?). Or perhaps you're interesting in applying some psychological reading of Pushkin's characers, or some historical reading of the novel and its huge number of references to all sorts of aspects of early 19th-century Russian culture and life. Or perhaps you'd be interesting in exploring some English translation and comparing it to the original? Or some aspect of its reception at various points in Russian history? The idea is that you select your topic, reflecting your ideas, your favorite approach to literary texts, and learning about some aspect of Evgenii Onegin that captures your fancy. I will only come up with a list of potential topics if you plead with me! But I will be happy to do plenty of individual brainstorming in my office (set an appointment!).
