An MAA Ancillary Workshop
Preceding JMM in Washington D.C.

Sunday, January 4, 2009

8:30am - 5:00pm

Coolidge Room

Marriott Wardman Park Hotel

Washington, DC

- Notes for the workshop: Slides or printable form
- The notes include instructions for installing R
on your computer. You should do this AHEAD OF TIME, because you may
not have Internet connectivity in the workshop hotel. As you'll
see, there are two steps involved:
- Install R itself from the R web site. The notes have links for Mac, PC, and Linux users.
- Download the ISM start-up file from the ISM site: The start-up file for R. This is a binary file, so use the "save as file" option on your web browser. Safari users have reported difficulty with this, so you may want to use a browser such as Firefox or Internet Explorer instead.

Copies of these files will be available on flash drives at the workshop, but it's best if you install them from the Internet before the workshop.

- The Introduction to Statistical Modeling textbook. You will
receive a bound copy of the book at the workshop.
- Exercises for the workshop. Two formats: for reading on paper or for reading on-line.
- Preface and the first few chapters of the textbook: Introduction to Statistical Modeling: PDF file
- More information on the statistical modeling project at the ISM web site.
- Information about the MSCC project to connect Modeling, Statistics, Computation, and Calculus in the undergraduate mathematical sciences curriculum.
