Welcome

Everyone feels a bit low sometimes, it's part of the natural rhythms of life. Sometimes though the feelings are more serious, part of a medical condition that can cause a disinterest in things sufferers once found enjoyable. Unipolar depression is real, but decades of research has made it a largely treatable condition. We've all seen the commercials for paxil or zoloft, heard about SSRIs, but what about psychotherapy? Is there any room for traditional talk therapy in treating a disorder treated so exclusively as a biological deficit?

This site is meant as a companion to Pharmalogical and Biological Treatments for Unipolar Depression, a part of The Undergraduate Behavioral Neuroscience Resource Project at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN. The project was launched to provide college undergraduates, advanced high school students, and anyone else that may be interested with up-to-date, accurate, and yet understandable information about topics related to behavioral neuroscience.

This site strives to maintain cohesive and concise explainations throughout, but be sure to check out the links page and those embedded throughout for further information. Depression is a complex disease, and our knowledge of it grows constantly. This site can not answer all questions about depression, but at the very least provides a starting place for further help and research. Web research can provide insight into illness, but no major treatment should be taken without consultation with a health professional.

This site was designed and is operated by Nick Malecek, a sophomore neuroscience and psychology student at Macalester College. All questions and comments are welcome!
