I have recently begun this series of oil paintings, where children are placed alongside birds and bugs.  They find themselves uncomfortably high up in trees, on the forest floor, wading in tidal pools.  They are strangers to these environments in one sense, but are also attempting to solicit help from the wildlife  around them.

I use science as a springboard to create works that serve almost as survival fantasies. Through the study of biological concepts and images I have been able to notice the places where human and animal forms intersect. It is at these points of intersection that many of my paintings find their origins. Evolutionary biology in particular has expanded my notion of what is visually possible in creating images of humans and animals.  I am interested in evolution not only for its metaphorical resonance with the process of painting itself, but also for the connections I can make between it and the development of the self as subject and psychological being. I would like to dream science into art.
