El Hadji Diop’s research is focused on cross-media analysis, especially the film and literature nexus, the comparative semiotics of cultures, textual pragmatics, and Afrophone creative writing in translation.

Diop has completed several translation projects in English, including the seminal biography of filmmaker Sembene Ousmane, Ousmane Sembene: The Making of a Militant-Artist, by Samba Gadjigo (Indiana University Press, 2010), and Doomi Golo: The Hidden Notebooks (Michigan State University Press, 2016), a tridimensional translation attentive to the multilingual texture and dialogic élan of Boris Diop’s debut Wolof novel.
