A Survey of Livestock Wealth and Marketing Among the Pastoralists in Northwest Eritrea

Woldetensae Tewolde (Asmara University, Eritrea)

This paper addresses the importance of wealth differences among the pastoralists in northwest Eritrea. Drawing upon data from a survey of 150 households, the paper analyzes important economic indicators that have significant effects on production strategies of the pastoral communities. The study argues that livestock are kept as a preferred store of wealth across a wide range of social groups and therefore differentiation of livestock ownership has profound impacts on social stratification and marketing behavior.
