From the introductory language sequence through upper-level topics courses and the senior seminar, students receive in-depth training in the German language while studying a wide variety of topics such as German literature, film, art, music, history, philosophy, and critical theory. The department offers language training at all levels as well as a major and a minor in German Studies. Students who have taken at least 2 semesters of German may live in the Deutsches Haus, Macalester’s on-campus immersion residence hall directed by a resident native-speaking instructor. Students with 4 or more semesters of German may participate in Macalester’s 6-month study abroad program in Berlin and Vienna. All students of German enjoy numerous co-curricular events, such as the monthly Kaffestunde, annual Oktoberfest, St. Niklaustag, Karnival, German film screenings, and metro area shows/plays/operas.
