Professor Mitchell’s main field of study is the fluid mechanics of very small or very slow flows, such as the flow of honey on a pancake or the disturbance generated by a swimming bacterium. This leads to mathematical and computational problems in the subfields of numerical analysis, partial differential equations, and integral equations. At Macalester, Will teaches courses such as calculus, differential equations, and numerical linear algebra and he has enjoyed supervising student research in the summer. Outside of mathematics, Will enjoys cross-country skiing and reading anything by Alice Munro. For a publication list please see the personal website linked above.
