Andy Timm—2013 Fellow

Andy Timm

Year: Class of 2015
Major: Political Science & Geography
Organization: Minneapolis Energy Options

I worked as a Field Organizer for the Minneapolis Energy Options campaign managing volunteers and our campaign presence at events. With Minneapolis’s contracts with Xcel and Centerpoint energy companies expiring in 2014, the camapign pushed to make the contracts more focused on clean, affordable, reliable, and local energy. In order to do this, we pushed for a ballot initiative that would allow the city of Minneapolis to explore creating a public utility.

The Chuck Green Fellowship was one of the most impactful experiences I’ve had at Macalester. The class exposed me to a huge variety of perspectives that wouldn’t normally have ever gotten in a class, and gave me new tools to think about social problems. The first half of the class developed my capacity as a leader and organizer, developing me the belief that I could succeed in a project as ambitious as was expected of the fellows. The actual project solidified my campaign work, and helped me invision a future where I work on progressive campaigns for causes and candidates that work for social justice.
