The Theatre and Dance Department is the artistic and intellectual home for Macalester students and faculty dedicated to theatre, dance, and performance studies.
The department is a laboratory for practice-based research, aesthetic inquiry, historical investigations, and the theoretical apertures of the performing arts. Our department supports the intersection of practice and theory.
Every year, we produce four mainstage theatre works, directed by faculty directors and guest artists, as well as two dance concerts featuring faculty and student choreographies. Students are active in all aspects of production, and are supported by classwork in acting, directing, movement, playwrighting, history, theory, design, technical theatre, and practice-based research.
THDA WELCOMES YOU, students, audiences, colleagues, to experience the ways that we learn in Theatre and Dance: through experiment and play, in classrooms, designlabs, rehearsal rooms and on the main stage. Our work reflects and extends the intellectual engagements at Macalester and in our greater communities; through performance, in theory and in practice, we make our world together.
