Your launchpad to college.

Thinking about college?
We want to help you get there.

Pre@Mac is a four-day experience immersing you in the language of college. We’ll introduce you to everything you need to know about finding and applying to your perfect school. Living on campus, just like a Mac student, you’ll:

  • Discover the different kinds of colleges and universities out there, from big state schools to liberal arts colleges like Macalester
  • Learn how schools like Mac use financial aid to make college more affordable
  • Experience life as a college student—sleeping in Mac’s residence halls, dining at Café Mac, and exploring our campus and neighborhood
  • Sample real classes taught by Macalester professors
  • Connect with other students on the college journey just like you

The 2019 PRE@Mac application is closed.

When and where does Pre@Mac take place?

Pre@Mac is June 17–20, 2019, on Macalester’s campus in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Who is it for?

Pre@Mac is for high school students in the summer between their sophomore and junior years (graduating high school in 2021). We’re looking for bright, motivated students from backgrounds that have been traditionally underrepresented in higher education.

Are there scholarships available?

There is no tuition or fee to participate in Pre@Mac.

What will sleeping arrangements be like?

Students will get to stay together on campus in one of Mac’s residence halls, for a taste of the full college experience.

Does Café Mac accommodate dietary restrictions?

Yes! Our campus dining hall offers a wide variety of options to suit our students’ tastes and needs. Plus it offers dishes from all around the world, which we think is pretty cool, too.

How do I apply?

Interested students must either submit an application using this form, or be nominated to apply by a teacher or guidance counselor. In addition to the form, you’ll need to send in one letter of recommendation, written by someone from school (such as a teacher, guidance counselor, or principal), or a college access advisor who can speak to your academic ability and potential.

How do I know if I am selected to participate?

Our committee will notify students by email and letter to let them know if they’ve been selected.

Do I have to sign something promising I’ll go to Macalester for college afterward?

We certainly hope you’ll come to love our school as much as we do, but this is about helping you find the college option that’s right for you—even if that’s not us.

Will there be bagpipes at this?

There might be bagpipes.

Still curious? Send any more questions to—we’d love to hear from you!
