I do the technical work that serves as a bridge between Epic—the nation’s largest software firm for electronic medical records—and the clinics, helping with everything from setting up the software to ensuring they are ready to manage, market, and can evaluate the success of their health-care expansion.

Nonprofits, grad school, grant-writing, and publishing were the paths I saw most English majors taking after graduation, but none of those were for me. My internship at the Minnesota Children’s Museum—in fundraising—had helped me see that it can be nice to be the one writing the check for the gift. My MacNest internship taught me to speak IT and use Outlook. And a MacConnect trip focused on tech, in the winter of my senior year, allowed me to think of myself as someone who could work in the for-profit sector. Together, those experiences helped me imagine applying for jobs that looked nothing like what most English majors expected they would do.

So much of my coursework in English set me up to rapidly process and organize information, to figure out what I need to know to understand a problem, and to communicate clearly to someone who doesn’t have the same context. I was initially recruited out of my English major as a tech writer for Epic, but their internal screenings made clear that I was even better suited to work on their implementation team. I spent a long time at Epic in implementation for solid organ transplant—a position I got because I would park myself next to a nurse and ask interesting questions, until I learned enough to be able to talk to medical transplant experts about why our software would make their jobs easier, their documentation more compliant.

Now, I bring technical problems to the attention of clinicians frequently, because even though I am not a medical or tech expert, I know how to ask the questions that will get to the root of their problem. My Mac education taught me how to think like that.

I also appreciate that Mac helped me see myself as a whole person instead of just an achievement machine. If I could tell current students one thing, it would be: just try things you are curious about. You have a whole community to support you.

Last updated: October 2025

           Return to Alumni Pathways homepage to explore other profiles

            <use xlink:href="/wp-content/themes/macalester-2020/dist/svgs/symbol-arrow.svg#icon"/>

I work for KeyCare, a start-up that licenses and supports healthcare software for clinics who want to add supplemental virtual care to extend their clinic hours for patients.
