I also co-lead our government relations team, which represents a broad variety of clients in front of the Minnesota legislature and state agencies. I was lucky to have educational experiences that taught me how to think in ways that helped me navigate my way here.

Coming into college, I was interested in things like history, English, and political science. While at Mac I played football and coached high school basketball. I was considering becoming a high school coach and social studies teacher. At the same time, I also felt myself drawn to speechwriting and eventually realized I had to make a choice between coaching and politics. I decided on law school, less to be a lawyer, but to be a writer in a way that I thought would get me into government or policy work.

My time at Mac taught me how to value reliably showing up, and how to think expansively. My majors taught me how to think, to write, and to consider different lenses on the world while trying to work through difficult issues. For me, football was a community within a community. It was consistency—routines of practice and games—and sticking it out on the field even when you are getting pounded. It introduced me to people who to this day are some of my best friends.

I believe that the development of the self that comes from a liberal arts education allowed me to trust and bet on myself, even in risky moments. I went to law school at night, while working days as lobbyist assistant for a downtown law firm, monitoring committee hearings and writing client reports. After graduating law school, I took a staffing one of the health and human services committees in the Minnesota legislature, even though the position was tied to election results. When we subsequently lost the election, I chose a five-month contract in a law firm doing government-relations work, instead of the more permanent job offer that came with benefits, because I wanted to stay involved in health politics. And now I am a partner in the tenth largest law firm in the state, doing meaningful health policy work that brings together the human concerns and the writing and research skills that I always thought were central to politics.

Last updated: November 2025

           Return to Alumni Pathways homepage to explore other profiles

            <use xlink:href="/wp-content/themes/macalester-2020/dist/svgs/symbol-arrow.svg#icon"/>

At my law firm I have built blended healthcare and government relations practice that focuses on representing Medicaid providers.
