My company handles settlement administration in mass tort cases\u2014think: the movie Erin Brockovich<\/em>, with hundreds of plaintiffs against a corporate defendant. After cases are heard, we become the trustees over funds that have been awarded, and we facilitate all the documentation and logistics to ensure people get paid. These are large-settlement cases typically involving significant personal injuries. In the past few years alone, we\u2019ve paid billions of dollars in settlement funds to hundreds of thousands of deserving plaintiffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I moved back to Buffalo for family reasons after graduation and went to law school here. I did not love being a trial attorney and instead started exploring the financial side of our business. When we decided to expand in that direction, we had six employees; now we have more than seventy. We\u2019ve been recognized as the fastest growing company in Buffalo in recent years because we developed a technology platform to do this work that, until five years ago, was all being done with fax machines and print billing. We\u2019ve gotten a process that used to take years down to mere weeks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I came to Mac a little na\u00efve, imagining I would one day go out and join the UN to make the world a better place. But being around so many different perspectives, exploring those ideas in small, guided classes, and having conversations with friends from different parts of the world showed me that maybe I should be focusing a little closer to home. Unlike some firms that outsource this work overseas, we are US-based. Building a technology-enabled legal services company based in the rust belt feels like a way to contribute to society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growing our business took a lot of informed marketing. We had to deeply understand what it does to an attorney to depose a thousand clients who have been harmed by the ugly side of, say, mass production of goods. Learning how to connect ideas, study trends, understand how historical context can affect an industry\u2026I got all of that in history classes at Macalester. Mac showed me how to make the connections that would resonate with these attorneys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This job is fast-moving and has to be meticulous, but also, we work with a lot of people who are dealing with the worst of traumas. My work-study job in Health Promotions (Consent Is Mac) for four years has turned out to be so important. Because of that, I have made sure that every person in our company has trauma-informed care training. So that\u2019s a whole different part of our company that I took directly from my work at Mac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
