{"id":36,"date":"2018-01-17T06:16:33","date_gmt":"2018-01-17T06:16:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/biochemistry\/majorsminors\/"},"modified":"2025-09-19T13:11:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-19T18:11:13","slug":"emphasis","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/biochemistry\/emphasis\/","title":{"rendered":"Emphasis in Biochemistry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An Emphasis in Biochemistry may be completed by students who major in either Biology and\/or Chemistry.&nbsp; Adding an Emphasis in biochemistry allows students to unify these two fields through coursework focused on the molecules and chemical reactions of life.&nbsp; Students choosing to complete an Emphasis in Biochemistry will have this noted on their transcript (e.g. Biology Major with Added Emphasis in Biochemistry; Chemistry Major with Added Emphasis in Biochemistry).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Requirements for a Biology Major with Added Emphasis in Biochemistry<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Students with a strong interest in pursuing more in-depth study of biochemistry may want to major in biology with an added emphasis in biochemistry. This emphasis may also be a good option for students aspiring to attend medical school and\/or graduate study in any biomedical field. Students choosing this option will have this noted on their transcripts as: Biology Major (Biochemistry). To earn an emphasis in biochemistry, biology students must complete all of the requirements of the biology major, with two of the upper-level electives being&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.macalester.edu\/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=26&amp;coid=136342\">BIOL 351 &#8211; Biochemistry I<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.macalester.edu\/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=26&amp;coid=136343\">BIOL 352 &#8211; Biochemistry II<\/a>. In addition, students must take&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.macalester.edu\/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=26&amp;coid=136404\">CHEM 212 &#8211; Organic Chemistry II<\/a>, and one additional elective from the list below or as approved by the Biology chair.\u200b Students interested in pursuring graduate studies in Biochemistry and\/or Biophysics should take&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.macalester.edu\/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=26&amp;coid=136410\">CHEM 311 &#8211; Thermodynamics and Kinetics<\/a>&nbsp;as their additional elective; note that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.macalester.edu\/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=26&amp;coid=136410\">CHEM 311<\/a>&nbsp;has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.macalester.edu\/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=26&amp;coid=137406\">MATH 137 &#8211;
