Her lab focuses on investigating the mechanisms by which the bacterial pathobiont <em>Enterococcus faecalis<\/em> competes with other bacteria and persists within the oral cavity. Current research projects use functional genetics and molecular genetics techniques to identify and characterize <em>E. faecalis <\/em>genes required for traits that promote bacterial-host and bacteria-bacteria interactions, including biofilm formation and production of the extracellular protease GelE. Ruth\u2019s primary goal as a professor is to educate and mentor undergraduate students in the classroom and in the research lab. Under her mentorship, undergraduate students lead scientific projects and are key contributors to research publications.
