Radical MacACCESS

Join us for multiple campus events surrounding people with disabiltiies.  

9:30-10:30, Idea Lab:  Intersectionality and Disability:  Are you a person with a disability who also holds intersecting or marginalized identities?  This interactive, hands-on event is intended to make space for your voice.

Hosts:  Sedric McClure (Department of Multicultural Life) and Logan Schrader (Office of Student Leadership and Engagement)

12:00-1:00 PM, Olin Rice, Smail Gallery: Faculty and Student Discussion on Accommodations (Panel):  Almost 20% of our student population are qualified students with disabilities.  A brief outline of the legal aspects of accommodations followed by a student and faculty panel discussion about accommodations from a variety of perspectives. Audience participation is welcome.  Food served starting at 11:30 AM.

2pm – 4pm, Dewitt Wallace Library, Archives Classroom 254:  History of Disability Activism at Macalester:  Stop by during this time to tour the archives, and chat with Bea about the complex history of disability at Mac based her recent capstone work.  We promise you’ll learn something!

5pm – 6pm, Sounds of Blackness Lounge:  Self Care: What it is, What it Isn’t and How to Do it.  Are you a person who could use ideas on the whole idea of self-care? Will Enin, ’22 discusses how he manages self-care while being a student with some humor in the mix.  Pizza and salad provided.

7pm – 8pm,  Keynote, Kagin Ballroom: Katie Rose Guest Pryal, JD, PhD

Katie is a bestselling author, columnist, speaker, and law professor in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Some of Katie’s work includes Life of the Mind Interrupted: Essays on Mental Health and Disability in Higher Education (2017) and The Freelance Academic: Transform Your Creative Life and Career (2019). Katie is joining Mac to discuss the intersection of higher education and disability, in particular, how we can all work together to break the cycle of mental health stigma in our community.
